Glossary

Common lesson terms

This glossary keeps recurring lesson vocabulary in one place so beginner-friendly pages can stay clear without explaining every term from scratch each time.

Beat

One steady count in the pulse. In most beginner examples here, count 1-2-3-4.

Chord pattern

The full order of chords you repeat, such as Am to F to C to G.

Chord tone

A note that already belongs to the chord underneath, so it usually sounds stable.

Lead line

A short melody or lick you play over the chords instead of strumming the full chord shape.

Root note

The main note a chord or scale is built from. In A minor, A is the root note.
